PALLONE ANNOUNCES LONG BRANCH RECIPIENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY FIRE GRANT

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced that Long Branch Volunteer Fire Department in Long Branch, NJ received $67,500 in funding provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The money will be spent to improve emergency response capabilities by purchasing updated protective equipment for the volunteer fire department which serves 50,000 people during the year and up to 150,000 people during the summer season.

“I’m glad to see this funding provide improved equipment which will help our firefighters eliminate fires more efficiently and safely and better protect the Long Branch community in emergency situations,” said Pallone. “Firefighters and first responders deserve the best equipment and training we can provide while they risk their lives to protect us every day.”

Mobile Data Terminals purchased with the grant will be added to 11 fire trucks and will allow firefighters to have a plethora of preplanned field intelligence available around the clock including building floor plans, owner/occupant information, fire hydrant locations and more.

“We are thankful for Congressman Pallone’s support of our grant application and to President Obama and DHS Secretary Napolitano for awarding these funds to support the Long Branch Volunteer Fire Department,” said Fire Chief Sebastian M. Tomaine. “The additional capabilities that these computers will bring to our city will make our firefighters a more effective force and our citizens will be safer and better protected.”

The Long Branch Volunteer Fire Department has 160 volunteer firefighters serving out of nine fire companies who answer more than 1,700 calls for service every year.

The AFG program is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security and is part of a coordinated effort to improve the nation’s ability to respond to emergency situations.

In Fiscal Year 2009, DHS Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awarded approximately $565 million directly to fire departments and EMS organizations to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel with respect to fire and all other hazards.
