Pallone Says Federal Bill Will Help New Jersey Defray Medicaid Costs
and Save Teachers

Washington, DC — Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) today heralded house passage of legislation that would significantly help New Jersey defray its Medicaid costs and save approximately 3,900 teachers’ jobs.

“The Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act is completely paid for, and it reduces the deficit by $1.4 billion over 10 years—in part by eliminating a loophole that actually encourages corporations to ship American jobs overseas,” said Pallone. “New Jersey like many other states has faced some tough choices on the budget this year and the funding in this bill is important to maintaining the high quality of education we must continue to provide for children in this state. I urge the governor to move quickly to allocate this funding before the start of the school year to prevent any further disruptions to students’ education this year.”

“New Jersey would also receive $399 million in additional federal assistance to help defray the state’s cost of Medicaid, a federal state cooperative health insurance program for low income individuals. The number of New Jerseyans eligible for Medicaid has increased significantly as more people lose their jobs forcing the state to spend more dollars for this health insurance program. The budget the governor signed in June assumes this extra federal assistance and without it the state would have had to make up the money elsewhere,” added Pallone.

Governor Christie supported this initiative for more federal Medicaid funding.
