Pallone Announces $6.5 Million in Funding for Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, the Cancer Institute

Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr., (NJ-06) Wednesday announced $6.5 million in Defense Appropriations funding for programs in the New Brunswick area which will benefit Rutgers, the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and the Cancer Institute. The funding will go to projects that will improve disaster preparedness efforts and improve cancer prevention diagnoses.

“This money will fund renovations and the purchase of equipment for better disaster response capabilities and research on preparedness efforts at two area medical centers,” said Pallone. “Money for the Cancer Institute will help build on New Jersey’s strengths as a center of research and technology and leadership in these areas across the country.”

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital

This project will transform RWJUH’s emergency department into both a state-of-the-art disaster response center and a laboratory for the study of interventions that benefit disaster victims while affording appropriate protection to the facility and responders. Secured $3 million

UMDNJ – The Cancer Institute of New Jersey

The CINJ Gallo Prostate Cancer Center will use the funding to prevent and treat prostate cancer in military and civilian populations.  Through a partnership with the Department of Defense, new approaches will be developed to discover new markers of prostate cancer susceptibility and new targets for prevention.  Secured $2 million

Rutgers/UMDNJ

Funding for the University Center for Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response will be used for protecting the lives, health, and well-being of the general public, vulnerable populations, and the workforce and protecting the societal, economic, and physical infrastructure of NJ and the nation. Secured $1.5 million

The funding was requested by Congressman Pallone and approved by the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee in its FY 2011 funding bill.
