Pallone Renews Call for Recognizing Armenian Genocide After Secretary of State Clinton’s Visit to the Region

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Co-Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, commended Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for visiting the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex in Armenia this weekend in honor of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide. In light of the Secretary of State’s visit to the site, Pallone renewed the call for the United States government to officially recognize the systematic killing of 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923 as genocide.

“Secretary Clinton’s trip to the South Caucasus region demonstrates the importance of our relationship with the region,” said Pallone. “The Secretary’s visit to the genocide memorial was a respectful act and a display of progress in U.S. diplomacy at the highest levels towards recognition of the Armenian Genocide.  I urge the House of Representatives to move forward with legislation on Genocide Recognition and for the administration to support this effort. It’s my hope the Secretary will show a continued commitment to improving relations in the region.  Her recognition of Armenia’s commitment to improved relations with its neighbors and her support for a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict in light of recent Azeri attacks is strongly encouraging and appreciated.”

In March, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs voted to pass House Resolution 252, Affirmation of the United States Record on the Armenian Genocide Resolution, by a vote of 23-22.  The nonbinding resolution would officially recognize the actions taken against Armenians from 1915-1923 as genocide. The next move would be a vote by the House of Representatives.

April marked the 95th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
