Pallone on the First Anniversary of the Family Smoking
Tobacco Act Becoming Law

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee Tuesday released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the Family Smoking Tobacco Act being signed into law.

“One year ago today the Family Smoking Tobacco Act was signed into law giving the FDA greater authority and resources to regulate a product that directly causes about 440,000 deaths per year. I am a proud co-sponsor of this legislation and the important reforms it establishes.  As a result of this law, the FDA has a greater ability to regulate the way tobacco products are marketed to young people and establishes product standards to better protect the public’s health.  Most importantly, this will have the effect of preventing millions of young people from becoming smokers in the first place.

“I commend Chairman Waxman and the FDA for their leadership on this bill. The FDA has embraced this additional regulation authority and I look forward to an ongoing partnership as additional provisions of this law take effect. Because of this law, tobacco products are now subject to the same scrutiny and government oversight as consumer products like toothpaste and toys – as they should be - which is a win-win for our nation’s health.”
