Pallone Commends EPA Administrator’s Support of
Re-Instating Superfund Tax

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) Monday released the following statement on EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson’s support in re-instating the Superfund tax, which funds the clean up of hazardous waste sites.  Pallone has been a long-time supporter of re-instating the Superfund tax paid by oil and chemical companies, and has introduced H.R. 832 the Superfund Polluter Pays Act in support of this effort. Taxpayer money has funded site cleanup efforts, which have waned and depleted the larger fund since the Superfund tax expired in 1995.

“I applaud EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson for her support in reinstating the Superfund tax and the renewed effort to make the polluters pay and not taxpayers. Oil and chemical companies are subject to the Superfund tax and where a responsible party is not present to fund cleanup, communities rely on the Superfund to eliminate contamination such as toxic chemicals in drinking water wells and soil.  Without the monies provided by the tax, the program has not been adequately funded over the past 15 years.

“The disaster in the Gulf of Mexico shows that the government must hold oil and chemical companies accountable for the pollution they create. I look forward to working the Obama administration to facilitate the reinstatement of Superfund tax.”
