Pallone Announces Hearing on Chewing Tobacco

'Smokeless Tobacco: Impact on the Health of our Nation's Youth and Use in
Major League Baseball'

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. announced on Wednesday a congressional hearing on the use of chewing tobacco by young people, the health problems it causes and the influence of professional baseball players who chew tobacco.

The Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce's Health Subcommittee, Congressman Pallone said he wants to gather "all the relevant information, hear about the experiences of users and get the opinions of those knowledgeable of the issue."

The subcommittee hearing will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 14th, in Room 2123 of Rayburn House Office Building of the US Capitol in Washington, D.C.

"Just because there's no smoke doesn't mean there's no harm," said Pallone. "Young people should understand the consequences of chewing tobacco. The best way to protect them against health damage is to get a better understanding of the extent of its usage, the health problems it can cause and the factors that influence its usage."

Chewing tobacco has traditionally been associated with baseball so a better understanding of its usage by players will help us gauge the best ways to protect young people against any potential health problems, Congressman Pallone said.

The list of those participating will be available soon. Congressman Pallone wants to work cooperatively and productively with everyone involved with the issue with a shared goal of protecting America's youth.
