Pallone Testifies About Importance of 2010 Census in New Jersey

Trenton, N.J. - U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-6) Thursday will provide testimony before the Assembly State Government Committee regarding the importance and impact of the 2010 Census.

“Besides the law mandating that everyone needs to be counted every 10 years, an accurate Census count translates to billions of dollars for the people of New Jersey,” said Pallone.  “At a time when New Jersey’s budget is being cut significantly, money provided based on Census data will fund crucial social programs as well as things like infrastructure and emergency services.”

The hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18 in Committee Room 13 on the fourth floor of the State House Annex.

A representative from the U.S. Census Bureau and Leonard Preston of the New Jersey State Data Center are expected to testify along with Rep. Pallone.

Census forms will be mailed out in New Jersey and across the country in mid-March.  The Census determines federal funding levels for schools, hospitals, public transportation and housing, as well as state, local, and tribal governments.  An accurate count is essential to receiving part of the $400 billion distributed in accordance with the Census.

“I strongly encourage everyone to keep an eye out for the Census form in March and to take a few minutes to fill out the 10-question form,” said Pallone.

The hearing will be streamed live at http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/media/live_audio.asp.
