Washington, D.C. - Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr., the senior Democrat in New Jersey's Congressional delegation, issued the following statement on Tuesday praising Governor Jon Corzine for his four-year record leading the state through severe economic problems and welcoming the new Senate President, Steve Sweeney and the new Assembly Speaker, Sheila Oliver as they assume leadership roles in the New Jersey Legislature:
"After four years of leading the state through some of the most difficult economic times in history, Governor Corzine has earned the gratitude and appreciation of everyone in New Jersey. The times were tough, but they would have been far worse absent the Governor's leadership. His policies helped cushion the impact of the recession and will position New Jersey to rebound from the hard times. His legacy will undoubtedly include his accomplishments for children, including DYF reforms, health care for children and a school funding formula that reflects the needs of children. We will always value his contributions to New Jersey’s well-being.
“I must congratulate Steve Sweeney as the new Senate President and Sheila Oliver as the new Assembly Speaker. They are assuming important responsibilities at a time when their leadership skills are needed. I am confident in the judgement and dedication that Senate President Sweeney and Speaker Oliver possess. They have earned their leadership positions; but they deserve the help and support of everyone as they take on the challenges that confront us. I will continue to do what I can to help from Washington." |
