Emerson: Tax Relief in Limbo for 2011  – September 30, 2010
WASHINGTON   –  U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) said that Congress recessed early this morning over the objections of Representatives who wanted to extend tax relief for working American families into at least 2011.  The income tax relief at all levels of earnings, marriage tax penalty, estate tax, child tax credit and capital gains tax relief are all set to begin to expire next year.

“Every American who owes taxes will end up owing more in 2011 if the law is not extended.  During a crucial time for Southern Missouri families, tax increases are the last thing we should have to worry about.  Congress should have addressed this matter before adjourning until November,” Emerson said.  “So many families face difficult decisions over their family budgets, it’s completely irresponsible for some members of this Congress to avoid this important subject for millions of working American families.”

Emerson says it is impossible to know whether or in what form the U.S. House of Representatives will address the matter of expiring tax cuts in a lame duck session of Congress.

“Really, it is unfair to Americans as voters as well as to taxpayers.  People deserve the opportunity to know where their elected officials stand on tax legislation that could mean thousands of dollars in increased tax liability,” Emerson said.
