When I first ran for the U.S. Senate in
1992, I made a promise to hold open meetings in each of the
state's 72 counties every year to listen to people's concerns
and answer their questions. I have kept that promise, meeting
approximately 61,652 Wisconsinites at these sessions since
I was first elected. This is roughly equivalent to listening
to more than every person in Chippewa County (2008 Estimate
– 60,456)
Listening sessions, which are one of the most rewarding
parts of my job, are designed to allow people to discuss concerns,
and listen to friends and neighbors do the same in an open
environment. Except for my brief introductory remarks, I spend
the entire time listening, taking notes and responding to
questions. Wisconsinites give me great ideas for new legislation
at these meetings, and when they tell me that they are having
a problem with a federal agency, I can try to help. Listening
Sessions work in Wisconsin because so many people come and
tell me what's on their mind.
I generally schedule my listening sessions one or two weeks in advance.
The U.S. Senate schedule can be unpredictable and, on rare occasions,
listening sessions may need to be postponed if I need to return to Washington,
D.C., for votes. Notices of postponements will be posted on this page and
my staff will also alert the local media to help us get the word out.
