New Law Means Better Care, Lower Costs for Wisconsin

This new law helps to free the American people from the dominance of the health insurance industry, which has dictated how and whether they get health care coverage for far too long. It offers Wisconsinites access to good, affordable health care that will significantly reduce health care costs over time. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, this historic legislation will provide coverage to 32 million Americans while reducing the federal deficit by $143 billion over the next ten years, with an estimated $1.2 trillion in additional deficit reduction in the following decade.

Reforms that Work for Wisconsin Families and Businesses:

  • Bars insurance companies from discriminating based on pre-existing conditions, health status, and gender.
  • Provides Wisconsinites with better coverage and the information they need to make informed decisions about their health insurance.
  • Creates health insurance exchanges – competitive marketplaces where individuals and small business can buy affordable health care coverage.
  • Offers premium tax credits and cost-sharing assistance to low and middle income Wisconsinites, providing families and small businesses with the largest health care tax cut in history.
  • Ensures access to immediate relief for uninsured Wisconsinites with pre-existing conditions on the brink of medical bankruptcy.
  • Invests substantially in Community Health Centers to expand access to health care in communities where it is needed most.
  • Wisconsin's insurance commissioner and the Department of Health and Human Services can conduct annual reviews of new plans demanding unjustified, egregious premium increases.
