November 18, 2010

Ensuring Our Veterans Receive the Benefits They Deserve

November 10, 2010

Every year on Veterans Day, Americans take the time to give our millions of brave veterans the honor and thanks they deserve.  We thank those who have served out of love of country, and a desire to protect the rights that we prize so dearly.  As a veteran myself, I am humbled by the gratitude that is shown on this day, but am even more humbled by the sacrifices that so many other veterans and their families have made and continue to make.

New Resources for Combating Breast Cancer

October 14, 2010

Breast cancer is a far-reaching disease that affects hundreds of thousands of women each year and impacts the lives of the millions who love them.  It is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States (other than skin cancer) and the National Cancer Institute estimates that this year 207,090 women will develop breast cancer and 39,840 will die from it.  I know firsthand just how much this disease can impact a family - my two sisters both had breast cancer, and both died from the disease.

Stem-cell research must go forward

October 7, 2010

The Aug. 23 ruling by U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth halting federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research has had a chilling effect on one of the most promising fields of biomedical inquiry. But the out-of-the-blue ruling by this single activist judge is already having profoundly destructive effects nationwide.

Harkin/Woolsey: House Action on School Nutrition Bill Important Step Toward Historic School Nutrition Reform

December 2, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-CA-06) lauded today’s passage of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act by the House of Representatives by a vote of 264-157.  In particular, they singled out praise for a provision that would require the Secretary of Agriculture to set nutrition standards for all foods sold on the grounds of schools participating in the National School Lunch Program, consistent with their jointly introduced legislation, the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act.   Harkin and Woolsey have introduced this legislation every Congress since 2006.  Harkin has sought similar protections since the mid 1990s.

Harkin Joins Bipartisan Group of Senators Calling on Leadership to Focus on Extending Renewable Fuel Tax Credits

December 1, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today joined a bipartisan group of Senators in writing to Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell asking that they make an extension of renewable fuel tax and tariff provisions a high priority on the Senate’s legislative agenda. This includes the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit (VEETC) and the biodiesel tax credit.  In the letter, the Senators point out that if these tax credits expire or remain expired, that it would threaten jobs, slow the nation’s move toward energy independence and harm the renewable fuels industry.  A copy of the letter can be found here.
