New York, NY – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-New York) condemned the study authored by Al-Mutawakel Taha, a senior official with the Ministry of Information in Ramallah and posted on the Palestinian Authority’s website, which denies the historical connection between the Western Wall and Judaism. The Western Wall is traditionally known as the only remaining wall of the Second Temple, built by the Jews during the reign of King Darius circa 520 BCE, renovated by King Herod the Great in 19 BCE and destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. Ever since, unless prevented by ruling authorities, Jews have visited Jerusalem to pray at the Wall. In his report, Taha wrote the Western wall is a "Muslim wall and an integral part of al-Aqsa mosque and Haram al-Sharif" and claimed that Jews only began worshipping at the site in 1917 at the time of the Balfour Declaration.
