House Passes the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act

The U.S. House of Representatives today passed S. 3307, the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, by a vote of 267 yeas to 157 noes.  This legislation aims to improve children’s access to healthy and nutritious meals, implement new school food safety guidelines and establish nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools.  S. 3307 will increase access to nutritious meals by increasing federal school lunch reimbursement rates, making approximately $182,000 eligible to Guam to improve school lunches.

“Children on Guam enrolled in school lunch programs and millions more around the country, will benefit from passage of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act,” said Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo.  “This bill is critical to increasing access and improving the quality of nutritious school lunches on our island. Together with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative, this bill will help to reduce childhood obesity rates and improve the learning environment in our schools. Ensuring that children and students gain access to nutritious food is the first step towards their growth and development.”
