Congresswoman Bordallo Returns from Delegation Visit to Afghanistan

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo returned to Washington, D.C. today after a five-day fact finding mission to Afghanistan and Bahrain.  The Congressional Delegation was led by Congressman Gene Taylor of Mississippi, and also included Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina, Congressman Mike Conaway of Texas, Congressman Glenn Nye of Virginia, and Congressman Mark Critz of Pennsylvania.

The Congressional Delegation met with Earl Anthony Wayne, United States Deputy Ambassador to Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, and several other high ranking military officials to discuss the economic, political, and security progress in Afghanistan.  While in Bahrain, the delegation received an operational update from United States Ambassador to Bahrain Adam Ereli and Vice Admiral Mark Fox, Navy Central Command, Commander of the Fifth Fleet.  The Delegation also met with His Highness Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Bahrain Defense Forces.  The Congresswoman also met with servicemembers from Guam at various times during the trip.

“I always appreciate an opportunity to visit our men and women in uniform from Guam who are serving in harms way,” said Congresswoman Bordallo.  “I am very proud of our servicemembers’ dedication and professionalism, and I told them that the people of Guam and our nation appreciate their sacrifices.  Furthermore, the trip was helpful in better understanding the needs of our servicemembers who are serving in Afghanistan.  Our delegation was provided with insightful briefs about the progress we are making at routing out the extreme elements of the Taliban and bringing greater stability to this region.  The Obama Administration is putting the necessary resources into Afghanistan to meet our objectives.  We must continue to have close oversight of these activities to make sure we are ultimately successful.”
