REP. SUSAN DAVIS VOTES TO PROTECT WILD HORSES

Bill would prevent slaughter for commercial purposes

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA) cast a vote in favor of ending the practice of slaughtering wild horses and burros for commercial purposes.

“These majestic animals are part of the rich culture and history of our great nation,” said Rep. Davis.  “They deserve a much better fate than being led to the slaughterhouse.”

Currently, the Bureau of Land Management can sell wild horses or burros, older than 10 years, to be slaughtered and processed into commercial products.  The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act (H.R. 249) would prohibit this practice.

Supporters of the bill contend that there are more humane alternatives to slaughter, such as adoption, sterilization, or relocation.

In 2006, Davis supported a similar bill to prohibit the sale or slaughter of wild horses for human consumption.  That bill, which passed the House of Representatives, was not taken up by the Senate.

On a 277 to137 vote in the House, H.R. 249 moves to the Senate for consideration.

“I urge the Senate to take up this critical piece of legislation and send it to the President for his consideration,” added Davis.
