Steven Johnson Talks Sexy Ideas on CNN

SpeakersInTheNews_2011.gif"We have a tremendously innovative culture in this country," Steven Johnson tells Kathleen Parker and Elliot Spitzer in a CNN interview conducted Friday, December 3. "We shouldn't get over-confident, but in general I think we have other problems to worry about." In a followup discussion on the CNN blog, Johnson argues against the concept that our fast-paced society makes serious thinking less likely: "On the one hand, the ability to multi-task successfully (along with the many other skills that come out of digital-age media) is not a trivial skill. But focus is also important, and so we need to spend time teaching kids how to switch modes when appropriate: multitasking for the easier stuff, but zooming in to a more focused state when there is serious work to be done."

Among those that have taken notice is Chris Anderson, the editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine.

In her blog post, written in the style of a break up letter, Royal criticized the magazine for portraying women in a negative light to sell more issues. She contended that the magazine depicts women as sex objects and as a result, she could no longer recommend the publication to her students.
