Washington, D.C., Oct 30, 2007 - Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) released the updated Fort Lee Economic Impact Study on Monday, October 29, 2007. The study measures the economic impact of Fort Lee on the surrounding region, including the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George and the Cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond.

“As the communities here know, Fort Lee is an important part of this region. Through a variety of cooperative agreements, Fort Lee touches the surrounding communities on a national, state and local level. This announcement reinforces how significantly Fort Lee impacts our region’s economy,” said Forbes. “I am proud of the successful work done by Virginians of the Fourth Congressional District - Virginians both in uniform and out – to ensure that Fort Lee continues to have this strong impact on the region. The residents of the Fourth District were overwhelmingly in favor of keeping Fort Lee as a significant presence in the district and I think the magnitude of these economic numbers is a clear reason why that was the case.”

Highlights of the study include:

  • In 2006, the total impact of Fort Lee on the region was $803.1 million.
  • In 2007, the total value of output will increase by 43% to $1.1 billion and by 2008 that could increase another 45% to $1.6 billion in total impact from Fort Lee.
  • In 2006, total compensation paid to all affected workers in the impacted region was $779 million.
  • In 2008, compensation will increase to $1.2 billion and reach $1.4 billion by 2012 and 2013.
  • In 2006 Fort Lee generated $53 million in state and local taxes.
  • In the years 2007 through 2013 total taxes could increase to $580 million with $200 million in local revenue.

The study was conducted by the Virginia Economic Commission on the behalf of the Crater Planning District Commission. Congressman Forbes unveiled the updated report in Petersburg, VA with local community leaders, including Tim Kestner, Virginia Employment Commission, Delegates Rosalyn Dance (D-63rd) and Riley Ingram (R-62nd), Fort Lee Garrison Commander COL. Gwen Bingham, Deputy to Fort Lee Garrison Commander Esther Lee, Mayors John Wood (Colonial Heights) and Annie Mickens (Petersburg), Petersburg Vice Mayor Horace Webb, and Petersburg Councilwoman Dama Rice.
