are required to practice full-time for at least two years or part-time for four years at an NHSC-approved site.  An award of $30,000 is available for two years of half-time service. Approved sites are located across the country in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).

1. Check Eligibility Criteria

   The goal of the NHSC is to expand access to health care services and improve the health of people who live in urban and rural areas where health care is scarce. The NHSC recruits a variety of primary care, dental, and mental health providers who are dedicated to serve communities in need.

   • I am a U.S. citizen or national
   • My discipline is one of the following:
     • Physician (MD or DO)
     • Dentist (general or pediatric)
     • Psychiatrist
     • Nurse Practitioner (primary care)
     • Certified Nurse-Midwife
     • Physician Assistant
     • Dental Hygienist
     • Psychologist (health service)
     • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
     • Psychiatric Nurse Specialist
     • Marriage and Family Therapist
     • Licensed Professional Counselor
   • I am licensed to practice in the state in which I will serve as a Corps member.
   • I have unpaid government or commercial loans for school tuition, reasonable educational expenses and reasonable living expenses, segregated from all other debts (that is, not consolidated with non-educational loans).
   • I currently work or am applying to work in a facility that is:
     • A NHSC-approved facility, or
     • Located in a Health Professional Shortage Area, and is applying to become a NHSC approved site

   If you are not yet working in an approved site, go to step 2 to find a job or to see how your site can apply to become an approved site.

2. Find a Job / View NHSC Approved Sites

   In order to successfully apply to the NHSC, you will need to provide verification that you have a job at an approved site, or that you have an employment contract to start work at an approved site within 60 days of receiving a NHSC loan repayment award.

   • Find jobs currently available at NHSC-approved sites.
   • Find out if your current work site is a NHSC-approved site.
   • If you are currently working in a Health Professional Shortage Area, check to see if your site can apply to become a NHSC-approved site.

3. Apply Online

   Create an account and complete the online application.

   Review the application instructions to help you complete your application. Be sure to have your NHSC-approved site's name and address, which you will need to complete the online application.

4. Submit Documentation

   Review the application instructions to identify the additional documentation that may be required which may include:

   • Loan Information and Verification
   • Employment Verification
   • Authorization to Release Information
   • Privacy Act Release Authorization (this form is not required for all, refer to the "Application Checklist and Instructions" below to see if this is required for you)
