Issues Agriculture
Wisconsin's agriculture industry plays a large and vital role in the economy of the entire state. Wisconsin's status as "America's Dairyland" is central to our state's agriculture industry. Our hard-working dairy farmers produce approximately 24.5 billion pounds of milk and lead the nation in cheese production. But Wisconsin's farmers produce much more than milk — they also are national leaders in the production of potatoes, ginseng, cranberries, various processing vegetables, and many organic foods.
In the Senate, I am working to support Wisconsin's farmers and ensure them a level playing field in the marketplace. I have launched a number of initiatives aimed at keeping Wisconsin's agriculture industry strong to help sustain and strengthen rural economies for the future and create more opportunities in rural communities.
I made good headway on many of these issues in the 2008 Farm bill and am looking forward to pressing for more improvements in the upcoming reauthorization. I am also working to better target safety net programs for farmers so that corporate-scale farms and non-farmers cannot abuse the system. In addition to several longstanding bipartisan efforts, my Control Spending Now Act puts forward several possible reforms.
