House Votes to Ensure DC Gun Ownership Rights (Sept. 2008) PDF Print
I would like to follow up with you on my recent update regarding legislation to remove the unconstitutional ban on hand guns in Washington, DC. As you may have heard, the House recently passed legislation that allows DC residents to purchase and use handguns for self-defense, enforcing the Supreme Court's decision that reaffirmed Second Amendment rights in DC.

Although the DC city council had previously passed some temporary measures to remove the ban on hand guns, they still imposed a registration process on anyone desiring to obtain a hand gun, and it has yet to pass a permanent law to comply with the Supreme Court's decision. The House bill makes the removal of the ban permanent, ends the bureaucratic oversight of hand gun ownership, and ensures that future laws written by the city council adhere to the Supreme Court's decision.

I am pleased the House voted to protect individual gun ownership rights in our nation's capital, and I urge the Senate to act quickly on this bill so that the President can sign it into law.
