UPTON, Robert William, a Senator from New Hampshire; born in Boston, Mass., February 3, 1884; attended the public schools; graduated from Boston University Law School in 1907; admitted to the Massachusetts and New Hampshire bars in 1907 and commenced practice in Concord, N.H.; member, State house of representatives 1911; delegate to the New Hampshire State Constitutional Conventions in 1918, 1930, 1938, and 1948, serving as president in 1948; appointed on August 14, 1953, as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Charles W. Tobey, and served from August 14, 1953, to November 7, 1954; unsuccessful candidate for nomination to fill the vacancy; resumed the practice of law; member, Mixed Board, Clemency and Parole, Bonn, Germany, 1956; special ambassador to Liberia in 1956; retired from law practice in 1970; died in Concord, N.H., April 28, 1972; interment in Blossom Hill Cemetery.
