Washington, Nov 11 - On the eleventh of November each year, we pause and salute our nation’s most revered heroes.  We reflect on the selfless sacrifice the brave men and women of our Armed Forces have given to protect us from tyranny and evil around the world, which ensures our freedom, liberty, and way of life here at home.  We remember that because of these men and women, the United States of America continues to stand as the world’s greatest democracy.

Veterans of all generations and conflicts have shown their love and gratitude for this nation through their commitment to keep us safe in all corners of the world.  In the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as here at home, I have had the honor to shake the hands of thousands who wear and have worn our nation’s uniform.  It is those moments I am so proud to be an American because I know that I stand before men and women who have selflessly put our great country before themselves and who have sacrificed their lives to protect the precious values for which America represents.  There is no one more brave than a man or woman who has proudly accepted the call of duty and who has honorably worn our nation’s uniform.  To them and their families, we owe an eternal debt of gratitude and respect.

Today marks the 57th annual observance of Veterans Day.  As the leaves continue to fall on our nation’s most hallowed grounds, let us remember those Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who have gone before us and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice - those who never made it home to see their loved ones, but who now guard the gates of Heaven.  These men and women and those they have left behind deserve our love, admiration, and prayers.

It is my hope that each day we are fortunate to wake up, we keep in mind the sacrifice of the past and present servicemen and women, and we thank them.  Furthermore, it is my hope that every American has the honor to look into the eyes of a Veteran, understand what they have sacrificed for us, and shake the hand of the true American hero.  May God bless all of our nation’s heroes, and may God continue to bless America.
