CLYBURN STATEMENT ON REPUBLICANS BLOCKING EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC) released the following statement after House Republicans blocked an extension of unemployment benefits for millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet in these difficult economic conditions.

“As millions of American families struggle during these difficult economic times, Congressional Republicans showed their true colors just before the holiday season by blocking an extension of unemployment benefits.  The three month extension would have helped those unable to find a job through no fault of their own make ends meet, while providing an important boost to the economy as it recovers.  Unemployment benefits prevented over 3 million people from falling into poverty and extending them would increase consumer spending and get our economy back on track.

“This comes on the heels of two prominent Republicans threatening to change the Federal Reserve’s mandate of striving for maximum employment.  Republicans need to get their priorities straight.  Rather than working to make President Obama a one-term president, the GOP should be focused on creating jobs and growing the economy.”
