CLYBURN STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF MIDDLE CLASS TAX RELIEF ACT OF 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC) today released the following statement after the House voted to extend middle income tax cuts for all Americans, as well as tax cuts that spur economic growth and help Americans struggling with a slow moving economy.  The Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010 extends the current tax rates on the first $250,000 in income for all Americans, providing a fresh reminder of the stark difference between the priorities of Democrats and Republicans.

“House Democrats acted today to extend tax cuts for all Americans on their income up to $250,000. Yet the GOP said no. They would deny middle income tax cuts so millionaires and billionaires can get a bigger break. That means borrowing another $700 billion from China for the wealthiest 3 percent, amounting to $2,000 per American household.

“The Bush tax cuts were the largest contributor to the deficit in the last decade, and it’s time for everyone to tighten their belts and make tough budgeting choices to address that debt.

"While Democrats today stood up for those Americans struggling to make ends meet in these tough economic times, Republicans again sided with the wealthiest few who should be giving to charity instead of getting charity.

"I urge my colleagues in the Senate to do what is right and pass this middle income tax bill quickly, so we can get it to the President for his signature and provide some much needed certainty to the American people.”
