Internships

I am pleased to offer internships in my office to college students, recent college graduates, and others who have an interest in public service, so that they may gain firsthand experience of how a Congressional office works. Residents of New York, and especially those from the 7th Congressional District, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Internships are offered both in my New York and Washington D.C. offices and are for a minimum of 10 weeks during three periods: Spring, Summer, and Fall. My office is also glad to help arrange college credit for those who participate in an internship. All internships are unpaid, but my office can provide some assistance with locating housing in Washington.

Internship Description

Interns perform a wide variety of tasks in our office, and we encourage them to enrich their time by working closely with staff members, attending legislative sessions of interest to them, and utilizing their unique talents and skills. Internships have three different components: daily operations, legislative research, and special projects.

Daily Operations: Interns will learn about and participate in the daily operations of the office including: compiling daily news mentions, responding to constituent requests, cataloguing incoming correspondence, and composing general memos and documents.

Legislative Research: Interns will be given the opportunity to learn about the legislative process and participate in all areas of research including: performing preparatory research and composing corresponding memos, participating in related meetings, and observing floor proceedings.

Special Projects: In addition, interns may have the opportunity to work on projects of particular educational interest to them and significant benefit to the office.

Applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, and a few short writing samples to the internship supervisor at least 10 weeks before the start of the internship period.
