Gent[lemen]:

You are requested
to act as Committee to
determine the selection
of portrait of Mr. Clay–
pursuant to the Resolution
of the General Assembly
approved January 11, 1865.

Do the portraits

on exhibition meet the
object of the resolution?
Which of the two is the better?

Your response to
these questions is
respectfully solicited.

Respectfully,
Tho. E. Bramlette
Gov. of Ky

(Appended to the letter)
Mr. Stanton in my opinion gives
an expression almost if not quite
impossible to be excelled on canvas.
No comparison between the two
paintings as to merit and resemblance.
