Phillips Legacy Scholars To Experience Leadership Training at Namesake Campus

Legacy scholars small group discussion. For the first time since its inception, Phillips University Legacy Foundation will host its renowned leadership conference in Enid this fall. Thirty-one Phillips University Legacy Scholars will learn from distinguished PU alumni and have a chance to walk the hallowed grounds of their namesake's former campus November 11-14.

"We hope bringing the scholars "home" will instill in them an appreciation for the rich traditions and history of PU and the many local citizens who attended or taught at the University," said Kelly Coker, vice president and executive director of the Legacy Foundation.

This year's "Connie Speer Cravens Memorial Leadership Conference" pays tribute to one of the organization's founding members, who mentored and inspired dozens of Legacy Scholars through the years. Reverend Janetta Cravens Boyd, a '96 PU alumna and daughter of the late Connie Speer Cravens, will keynote the conference theme about the "Spirituality of Leadership". Central Christian Church will host the students' training sessions.

"We believe these promising young people will mature into influential Christian leaders in business, their communities, the church, and the world," Coker said. The Foundation awarded $66,000 in scholarships and leadership training opportunities this academic year. The full-time undergraduate students attend one of the 17 colleges or universities affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

A long standing landmark of the PU campus, the columns represent the ideals of the Phillips University experience: spiritual, intellectual, social and physical.Hosting the conference in Enid provides a unique opportunity for alumni and friends to not only meet the Legacy Scholars, but also to participate in or sponsor a series of special events Saturday afternoon November 14th. The "Phillips University: The Legacy Lives" activities kick off at 1 pm with a private painting exhibition for Phillips alumni, friends and scholars featuring former art faculty member and '57 grad Jim Bray (designer/painter/calligrapher). The exhibition is entitled "Northwest Oklahoma: The World I Used to Know" and will open to the public at 3 pm. Walking tours of the former campus begin at 2 pm, followed by a special sneak preview of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center at 3:30 pm.

The activities continue Saturday evening with the "Phillips University: A Legacy Lives Banquet" at the Gantz Center on the former Phillips campus at 6:30 pm. Guest speaker Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the 2010 Legacy Scholars will highlight the evening's festivities. Tickets are $45, which includes all of Saturday's events, and are available by calling 580-237-4433 by November 5th.
