Klobuchar meets with families adopting from Russia

Minnesota Associated Press

April 19, 2010

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar met with Minnesota families on Sunday who are concerned about their pending adoptions from Russia.

Russian officials indicated last week the country would suspend adoptions with the United States. That happened after a Tennessee woman sent her 7-year-old adopted son back to Russia with a note saying he was mentally ill.

Last week, Klobuchar wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to urge that the State Department work with Russia to allow pending adoptions to be completed.

Klobuchar says she and her staff are working to keep the families updated on developments and help them complete their adoptions. She is also working on legislation to promote better support for families after adoptions.

It's estimated about 3,000 U.S. families are in various stages of adopting children from Russia.
