Minnesota's Capitol Hill Democrats want troops home as soon as practicable

WASHINGTON - Returning from her first trip to Iraq, Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Tuesday that she saw progress in police training, reaffirming her support for keeping U.S. troops in Iraq to train more Iraqis. At the same time, the Minnesota Democrat said, combat troops should start returning home this summer. Klobuchar -- co-sponsor of a failed Senate resolution that would have required combat troop redeployment by next March -- said improved police training was evident when she visited Fallujah, the capital of Anbar Province, the vast, insurgent-riddled area that spreads west from Baghdad to the Syrian border. She said the number of trained police went from none in 2005 to 1,000 now, and Iraqis are increasingly becoming police officers in Anbar.

The trip "lends support to my idea that we should have a goal for withdrawing combat troops," she said Tuesday. Klobuchar joined three other senators -- Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, John Sununu, R-N.H., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. -- during a long weekend trip to Iraq, Kuwait and Germany.
