Passage of Bipartisan Measure Will Keep Nevadans' Food Safe

November 30, 2010 - The Senate today passed a sweeping overhaul of the nation's food-safety system that will ensure that the food Nevadans put on their kitchen tables every night will be safe. This legislation grants the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the resources it needs to recall tainted foods, increase inspections, demand accountability from food companies and oversee farming. "Our food-safety system has not been updated in almost a century," said Nevada Senator Harry Reid. "This frightening fact was brought to light by the experiences of people like Rylee Gustafson, a young girl from Henderson, Nevada, who was nearly killed by bacteria from a salad. The bipartisan measure we passed today will protect families from scares like these."
