This month NEH Chairman Jim Leach participated in several events related to his 50-state Civility Tour initiative and the NEH’s work with state humanities councils. Chairman Leach was honored with a 2010 Common Ground Award, opened a Literature & Medicine conference on humanities-based approaches to treating trauma, and discussed civility at the Chicago Humanities Festival.  MORE

On October 15-16, 2010, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Ministry of Culture, People’s Republic of China held a series of roundtable discussions on the importance of the arts and humanities to cross-cultural relations. The Second U.S.-China Forum: A Binational Conversation on Bridging Cultures, convened at the University of California, Berkeley, brought together prominent artists, writers, historians, and political theorists from both countries to discuss the similarities and differences in how Americans and Chinese perceive culture, the role of tradition and innovation in culture, and how culture has influenced relations between China and the United States.
