John Caldwell Calhoun
Lithograph by E.B. Kellogg and E.C. Kellogg after William Henry Brown, 1845
(U.S. Senate Collection)
The swallowtail coat was fashionable in the early 19th century, but by 1850
was no longer considered proper day wear. A fine example of the style, with
its nipped-in waist and long "swallow" tails, can be seen in this silhouette of John C. Calhoun.
