Douglas Coupland and William Gibson in the HootSuite Neighborhood

December 26th, 2010

Two Internet Visionaries Meet HootSuite (And a Pile of Tupperware) – A story by Chris Trottier

As HootSuite’s Ambassador of Happiness, sometimes I need a caffeinated beverage. So because I craved coffee, I stepped out of the office. Immediately, I noticed two men examining a pile of tupperware. One man was sporting a beard, the other a toque.

HootSuite's Chris and Gavin pose with Gibson and Coupland

“Who would leave perfectly good tupperware on a sidewalk?” asked the bearded man, “This could be recycled!”

He then turned towards me and asked, “Do you know anything about this?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know what the story is behind that.”

Then, I noticed the bearded man looked familiar. Examining his face, I exclaimed, “Hey! I know who you are! You’re Douglas Coupland!”

“Yes, I am Douglas Coupland,” he confirmed, then gestured towards the toqued man, “And he is William Gibson.”

“Douglas Coupland?! William Gibson?!” I suddenly blurted, “Here at HootSuite, you’re both considered heroes! I got to tell the rest of the office about this!”

Who are Douglas Coupland and William Gibson?

In 1995, Douglas Coupland foresaw social media. His book Microserfs was written in blog format before blogs existed. One feature of this book — a mass of jumbled words mapped by font size — can now be retroactively recognized as tag clouds. JPod, a later book of Coupland’s, describes the highly connected social activity of tech geeks’ daily lives. For millions of people, the Internet is now how they connect with friends and family.

No less influential is William Gibson. Ever heard of “cyberspace“? Gibson coined the word. In 1984, his book Neuromancer described an intricate world where people were able to instantly communicate over a computer network. During a time when few people owned a modem, most of what William Gibson wrote was science fiction. Today, much of it is science fact.

Here at HootSuite, we’re fanboys and fangirls of Coupland and Gibson’s work. Without these men’s seminal ideas, would there be such a thing as a social media dashboard? So we knew we had to show our gratitude. Daveo, our Community Wrangler, had an idea…

Because We Give a Hoot

“Quick! Get them both a t-shirt!” Dave Olson suggested. In a moment flat, we ran out of the office and gave them two beautiful HootSuite t-shirts. With both of them holding a token of our appreciation, Greg (HootSuite’s BizDev Manager) snapped a picture with Gavin (HootSuite’s Systems Administrator) and myself.

So why were Douglas Coupland and William Gibson hanging out with each other? As it turns out, they were on their way to recording a CBC Radio special. This special will be broadcast on January 8, so stay tuned for details.

Both men are active on Twitter, so be sure to follow @DougCoupland and @GreatDismal. Earlier this year, Gibson told Wired Magazine“I’m a natural born Twitter machine.” As for Coupland’s Twitter musings, “Prepare for an onslaught of cleverness and wonder”.

(And just in case you’re wondering about the tupperware, we still don’t know the story behind it).

Ning Social Communities Added to HootSuite Dashboard

December 16th, 2010

Idea to Reality

In just six short weeks, we crafted an idea and turned it into a reality. In early November, we embarked on a mission to provide more new tools to help HootSuite users manage more social media activities and networks through a new API. Last week, HootSuite announced integrations with the popular Salesforce Chatter & Lead Scoring apps which will be included in the forthcoming App Directory.

Time for Ning

HootSuite App Directory Ning Logo

Ning is the leading online platform for the world’s organizers, activists and influencers to create social experiences that inspire action. For brands and organizations of all shapes and sizes, Ning span categories like politics, entertainment, small business, non-profits, education and more.

Flying Soon: HootSuite App Directory to Launch with Salesforce Chatter & Lead Scoring

December 9th, 2010

Chatter In-dash

Today at Dreamforce, HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes revealed a preview of the upcoming Salesforce integration into HootSuite. This integration will tie into the HootSuite App Directory launch, slated for early next year.

We are excited to announce the first apps to be made available: Salesforce’s Chatter and Lead Scoring web applications. With more than 87,000 active (and successful) SMB and Enterprise customers and millions of individual users, Salesforce is an established leader for sales teams.

Collaborate & Coordinate

By adding the popular Chatter (enterprise collaboration tool) and Lead Scoring (lead generation and prioritization tool) functionalities into the HootSuite dashboard, sales and marketing teams will have a powerful new way to efficiently collaborate as well as coordinate and prioritize new leads. Plus users can complete these tasks from within the same tool used to monitor social media conversations.

HootSuite dashboard Chatter example

Following these conversations adds a handy way to get to know your customers before starting negotiations as well as generating leads by tracking keywords. By keeping these conversations and customer intelligence resources in one centralized view, teams will increase productivity. Instead of switching back and forth between tabs and windows to view the various apps, simply add these apps as streams within your familiar HootSuite tool.

Salesforce Lead Scoring App in HootSuite App Directory

Hatching Soon

The forthcoming HootSuite App Directory will feature tools which expand the capabilities of the dashboard by integrating apps into streams. The directory will launch early next year giving developers time to create many of the ideas we receive in the Community Feedback Forum. If you have an idea, be sure to share it in the Feedback Channel.

To be considered for early launch, developers should apply for API Access and be sure to keep checking the HootSuite blog and follow @HootSuite_Apps for all the latest developments.

Eager for Chatter?

tweet after winning HootSuite ipad contest

Tweet from @kelkel926

If you’ve been keeping up to date with recent HootSuite news, you’ll know that we recently exceeded one million users for our beloved dashboard.

In addition to the excitement of crossing the one million user mark, we had a winner for our impromptu Twitter contest — the correct guess for the date and time of the 1,000,000th sign-up. @kelkel926 predicted our millionth user would sign up at 11:24:15:42:21 and was awarded with a wi-fi iPad from us at HootSuite Headquarters. Congrats!

Hoots from the News

Reaching the 1,000,000 user mark was a huge milestone for us here at HootSuite and we’re happy to see that others felt the same way.  To celebrate this momentous occassion, we also released a handy infographic to illustrate the trends and usage patterns of the social web.

Here are some of the posts and write-ups from around the world that picked up on our big news, and there’s even more in the our social bookmark stream:
