If UN won't follow our laws, UN should leave Paul says arrogance of international bureaucrats is another reason to oppose UN

WASHINGTON, DC - Arrogant officials of the United Nations are now not only flaunting their disdain for US policy, but also for the simple traffic laws of New York City; they need to follow the laws or find a new home willing to tolerate their behavior, says US Representative Ron Paul (R-Surfside, Texas).

"At every turn, the UN thumbs it's nose at the sovereignty of the United States, and so it really shouldn't surprise any of us that the same UN officials thumb their collective noses at the traffic laws of New York City," said Paul. "The people of New York, and indeed the whole United States, have put up with the UN arrogance for far too long."

City officials in New York have been protesting the UN's lack of respect for their traffic laws. Specifically, UN officials have been parking on sidewalks and not paying their fines and penalties.

Paul is the sponsor of HR 1146, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act. The legislation would immediately end the United States' participation in the UN - including all military operations - prohibit the UN's access to federally-owned properties, and end the diplomatic immunity for UN envoys operating in the United States.

"George Washington, in his farewell address, told America to be weary of 'entangling alliances.' He understood very clearly what has since been either ignored or forgotten: foreign leaders will not, nor can the be expected to, do what is best for American citizens. If we want what is best for this nation, Americans should be running America, not ceding rights and authority to international organizations."

Paul said the future of environmental, business and labor laws are all dependent upon the very US sovereignty compromised by the UN, the World Bank, NAFTA and other global initiatives.

"We should be free, as a sovereign nation, to set our trade policies, without being coerced by hostile international bodies into conforming to policies that hurt American interests."

Paul said the fact UN official do not feel compelled to even follow New York City's traffic laws is symbolic of their opposition to American ideals and policies.

"It's time for the US to exert its sovereignty. One of the constitutionally proscribed roles for the federal government is to protect the interests of Americans in the face of foreign intrusion. By willfully disobeying the laws of the City of New York, the UN is intruding on the internal affairs of American citizens. We must defend the rights of the city and people of New York, remove ourselves from the UN, and tell the international bureaucrats that they need to find somewhere else to hold their anti-American club meetings."
