Paul Honored by Group for Senior-Friendly Voting Record Congressman Votes Consistently to Support Older Americans

Washington, D.C- Congressman Ron Paul recently received another award for his senior-friendly voting record in the 106th Congress. The Seniors Coalition, a nonpartisan group which monitors Congressional votes on legislation of concern to seniors, presented Paul with its "Senior Legislative Achievement Award" in recognition of his distinguished service to senior citizens in his district over the past two years. Mary M. Martin, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Coalition, presented the award to Paul in an October 1 letter.
"Your performance on our vote rating validates the trust that senior citizen voters of your district have placed in you," Martin stated. "Ron Paul clearly voted in the best interests of our senior citizen members and supporters."
Paul's high senior-friendly rating was based on a wide range of senior issues, including Social Security "Lockbox", estate tax repeal, and repeal of the Social Security earnings limitation, among others. Only lawmakers with a very high rating on certain key votes received the award.
Paul co-sponsored "Lockbox" legislation designed to prevent Congress from spending Social Security or Medicare funds on unrelated federal programs. "'Lockbox' is one of the most important bills in this Congress," Paul said. "Congress must be prevented from raiding Social Security and Medicare for pet spending projects, as it repeatedly has done. I'm glad that groups like the Seniors Coalition are recognizing 'Lockbox' supporters."
Paul also has supported seniors by consistently voting to lower their taxes. He co-sponsored legislation to abolish the estate tax and to repeal the Social Security earnings limitation for seniors who choose to continue working. Similarly, he introduced the "Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act," which repeals all taxes on Social Security benefits.
"I'm pleased to receive this award," Paul said. "Congress needs to protect hard-earned Social Security benefits and lower taxes on seniors. I plan to continue working hard for seniors in my district during the next Congress."
