CONGRESSMAN BOUCHER ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR NARROWS FIRE DEPARTMENT

$266,610 Federal Loan Will Enable Purchase of New Pumper Truck

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Rick Boucher announced today that, at his urging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through its Rural Development Agency, is providing a low-interest federal loan of $266,610 to the Town of Narrows to purchase a new pumper truck for the Narrows Volunteer Fire Department.

“This allocation of federal funding will enable the purchase of a new pumper truck for the Narrows Volunteer Fire Department, which will enable the Department’s members to respond more safely and efficiently to emergencies in Giles County,” Boucher said.

With the benefit of the federal funds, a 2011 model pumper truck will be purchased. The new truck will be able to hold 750 gallons of water, and it will have a pumping capacity of 1250 gallons per minute. The new fire truck will replace a model that is nearly 30 years old and no longer certified for use in fighting structure fires.

The Narrows Volunteer Fire Department has 37 members, all of whom serve on a voluntary basis. The Department provides fire protection to the Town of Narrows and the surrounding areas of Giles County.

I am pleased that the Rural Development Agency is providing this funding for the Narrows Volunteer Fire Department.  It is important to ensure the safety of our region’s fire department personnel by the best equipment and training possible. This provision of federal funds is a necessary step in protecting the people who protect us," Boucher said.
