ISSUES IN FOCUS

Economy

Over the past eight years, Americans have seen their dreams of prosperity and security undermined by a government that has ignored the middle class at the behest of special interests, adopted reckless fiscal policies, and failed to protect consumers, investors and the economy. With the unemployment rate the highest in fifteen years, monthly-job losses the worst in a generation, and the home foreclosure rate the highest on record, the nation has fallen into a deep recession, from which it will take a long time to recover.

In the 111th Congress, Congressional Democrats will work with President Obama to quickly jumpstart that recovery process by spurring good-paying job creation, preventing unnecessary home foreclosures, investing in education, expanding access to health care, providing responsible tax relief, encouraging business growth, promoting sound fiscal policies, and, in general, strengthening the middle class. As we move forward, we invite our Republican colleagues to join us in continuing what the American people started on November 5, 2008, by bringing change to Washington, beginning with rebuilding the American economy.
