She went to the doctor for a bone spur, and she was told that she had to have a fusion which would cost at least $100,000. While the hospital was helping her figure out options, she learned that she might qualify for the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan. The day applications for the plan became available, state officials in New Mexico contacted Kim and encouraged her to apply. She was accepted into the pool on August 1st and is now able to receive treatment for her condition.

Having hemophilia all his life, Paul understood the importance of a job with good health insurance benefits and sought work in the federal government. After five years, Paul left his position in government and enrolled in a health insurance continuation of coverage which lasted eighteen months. When this extension ran out he enrolled in an individual plan in Virginia with a $1 million cap. In three years, Paul exhausted this policy because of costs related to the treatment of hemophilia. With options to change jobs, move to another state, or apply for disability status, Paul was faced with some very tough decisions. As it turned out, the company where Paul works enrolled him in an employee plan with a $6 million cap; Paul has already used about $1 million worth of coverage. The Affordable Care Act will lift this cap on how much health care he can receive.

Tracy's son, Sami Wirtanen-DeBenedet, has Neurofibromatosis, a disorder that affects 1 in 3,000 children that causes tumors to grow anywhere in the body. Because there is no cure for the condition itself, the only therapy for people with neurofibromatosis is a program of treatment by a team of specialists to manage symptoms or complications. Surgery may also be needed when the tumors compress organs or other structures. Tracy's plan currently has a lifetime limit on care that Sami could easily reach with his condition. Under the Affordable Care Act, Sami's plan will be banned from imposing a lifetime limit on his care.
