GOP Leaders to President Obama: Let’s Work Together to Stop the Tax Hikes, Cut Spending & Help Create Jobs
While GOP Offers a Clear Agenda to Get the Economy Back on Track, Dems Cling to Failed Policies Squarely Rejected By the American People

Washington (Nov 30)

Today, congressional leaders will head to the White House, where Republicans will urge President Obama to heed the message sent by the American people earlier this month: cut spending, stop all the tax hikes, and help create jobs now.  In an op-ed published in today’s Washington Post, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) make clear that Republicans stand ready to work with President Obama and Democratic leaders on the people’s top priorities:

“Republicans got the message voters have been delivering for more than a year. That’s why we made a pledge to America to cut spending, rein in government, and permanently extend the current tax rates so small-business owners won't get hit with a massive tax hike at the end of December. …

“While Americans have been asking ‘where are the jobs?’ for more than two years, our friends across the aisle have clung for too long to the liberal wish list, including a job-killing health-care law, a ‘cap-and-trade’ national energy tax and an out-of-control spending spree. The November elections represented a wholesale rejection of these policies.

“Now we have a real chance to move away from the misplaced priorities of the past two years and work together on common-sense proposals that will build a foundation for the economic rebound we all want. …

“Together, we can focus on the things Americans want us to do - not on what government wants Americans to accept. The clock may be winding down on this session of Congress, but there is still time to do the right thing. If President Obama and Democratic leaders put forward a plan during the lame-duck session to cut spending and stop the tax hikes on all Americans, they can count on a positive response from Republicans.”

While Republicans have put forth a clear agenda aimed at cutting spending and ending the economic uncertainty that is making it impossible to create jobs, Democrats are still desperately clinging to the same failed policies that have been squarely rejected by the American people. According to today’s Roll Call, Democrats returned to Washington yesterday geared up for yet another “round of fiercely partisan fighting over an agenda that even many Democrats have little interest in … with few solid details about what will be on their plates beyond partisanship.”  While Democrats “have not yet agreed on a tax plan,” they are reportedly considering holding a series of unnecessary votes on the issue in hopes of using these votes against Republicans in 2012 – proving once again that they are more concerned with political posturing than listening to the American people who want Washington focused on helping small businesses create jobs by cutting spending and stopping all the tax hikes.

A PLEDGE TO AMERICA.  According to an Associated Press-CNBC survey released today, “to ease surging budget deficits, Americans prefer cutting federal services to raising taxes by nearly 2-1.”  Republicans are listening to the American people, and standing by their Pledge to America to stop all the tax hikes, cut spending, and reform the way Congress works.  Every American family and small business is facing a massive tax hike in just one month.  It is time for Democratic leaders to put politics aside and allow Congress to hold an up-or-down vote on stopping all of the tax hikes.  With small businesses unable to create jobs until Congress resolves the economic uncertainty caused by the looming tax hike, our economy and the 14.8 million unemployed Americans simply cannot afford any more needless delay.
