Southern Arizona high school students have until Nov. 7 to apply for congressional nomination
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is now accepting applications from Southern Arizona high school students interested in receiving a congressional nomination to attend one of America’s prestigious service academies.
Every member of Congress has the privilege of nominating a select few for admission to our country’s four service academies. The academies are federal institutions that provide undergraduate education for commissioned officers in the United States armed forces and merchant marines.
Interested students must apply within the congressional district in which they reside. If the applicant meets the high standards required by the academies, he or she will be offered an interview by the congresswoman’s Academy Advisory Committee, a 23-member panel of active duty and retired military personnel.
Giffords, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, nominates individuals to each academy, but it is up to the academy to make the final decision. The academies include:
U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado
U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York
U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland
Applications are due at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Giffords’ Sierra Vista District Office, 77 Calle Portal, Ste., B-160, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635. The application should be mailed to the attention of Shay Saucedo, Academy Coordinator. Late applications will not be accepted.
Application forms, instructions and a list of required documents are available on Giffords’ website at www.giffords.house.gov. Click on the Services tab to the left of the screen, and then click on the Academy Nominations icon at the middle of the page.
