The Congressional Art Competition
Each year my office holds a congressional art competition to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talent of young people in my district. All high school students who are permanent residents of the 1st Congressional District are eligible to enter the competition. The Congressional Art Competition was first launched in 1982, and has grown into a nationwide competition involving more than 650,000 students each year. Entries from Oregon's 1st Congressional District will be judged by selected members of Portland's art community. The winner will have his or her artwork hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building for one year. In addition, the winning artist is eligible for a $1,000 scholarship toward his or her education at the Art Institute of Portland and three round-trip tickets to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and opening of the exhibition in Washington, DC. The winner and runners-up will also be recognized at an award ceremony in Portland. All eligible artwork must meet guidelines established by the Architect of the Capitol and House Office Building Commission. Final pieces must be no larger than 32 inches by 32 inches and no more than four inches deep.
