WU STANDS UP FOR AMERICA’S SENIORS

Portland, Ore. Congressman David Wu (OR-01) issued the following statement today regarding the Seniors Protection Act:

“The Social Security Administration announced on October 15, 2010 that there would be no Cost of Living Adjustments for Social Security recipients in 2011. Like many middle-class families, seniors have struggled during this economic downturn.  Now is not the time to turn our backs on those who need us most. That is why I support the Seniors Protection Act, which would provide all Social Security recipients with a one-time $250 payment, helping millions stay in their homes and cover basic medical costs. I will work to bring this legislation to the House floor when we reconvene in November and fight to secure its passage.

“My support for this one-time payment is contingent upon assurances from the Social Security Administration that such funds will be distributed in the best interest of the American taxpayer.  In this time of great need, our nation cannot afford to misallocate funds to fraudulent or ineligible recipients.”
