Tucson lawmaker will also recognize award-winning teacher and take part in national “Read Across America” Day during visit to Hendricks Elementary School
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will announce two education summit meetings on the No Child Left Behind Act during a Friday morning visit to Hendricks Elementary School.
Jay Stanforth, a third grade teacher at Hendricks, was last year's recipient of the prestigious Arizona Education Association's Christa McAuliffe Award and a finalist to receive the National Education Association Foundation's Award for Excellence.
Giffords will recognize Stanforth's achievement and read to an assembly of students in honor of the 103rd birthday of Theodor Geisel, the influential children's book author better known as Dr. Seuss. Today is the 50th anniversary of the publication of Geisel's popular work, “The Cat in the Hat.”
As part of “Read Across America” Day, a national celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, Giffords will read from his 1990 book, “Oh, the Places You'll Go!”
Giffords will provide details about the summit meetings planned for Tucson and Sierra Vista. The goal of the meetings is to gather information from parents, educators and school board members prior to congressional reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.
