RESPONSE TO IRAQ STUDY
December 6, 2006
Advice from the Iraq Study Group on a new way forward in the War on Terror caused considerable controversy in Washington DC and around the nation. Congressman Wamp called on Democrats and Republicans to come together to support and protect our national and global security interests. “Our bravest Americans are on the front lines fighting for freedom in Iraq,” Wamp said. “It is important that their efforts are not compromised by this report, but that we come together to do what is best for our nation.”

“STOP” UNDERAGE DRINKING

As is the case with underage drinking, illegal uses and abuses of legal products need to be stopped. Young people, 15 or 16 years old, are getting sick and even dying from alcohol. As an original co-sponsor of the Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act, Congressman Wamp said this as part of a floor statement: “It hasn't been discussed enough on the House floor, that underage drinking is illegal. When other things are illegal, we pay attention. And now we are addressing alcohol because it is still a big problem.”

TRAIL OF TEARS STUDY PASSES

In a testament to the richness and importance of American history, the Trail of Tears expansion study passed the House and Senate and will be signed into law by the President. Congressman Wamp introduced this legislation to make sure the complete story of the Cherokee's forced removal is heard. Because of its historical significance, H.R. 3085 enjoys broad support not only within Congress, but also within the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee and associated trail organizations such as the Trail of Tears Association.

U.S. RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

As co-Chairman of the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus, Congressman Wamp spoke on the house floor to stress the importance of new energy programs such as expanding the use of ethanol as an alternate fuel source. “We can have a dynamic, market-driven economy,” Wamp said, “if we invest in energy solutions for the world.” The Congressman also reiterated energy’s implications for security. “Dependence on foreign sources of energy leaves us vulnerable,” he said. “This is a national security issue.”

A TRIBUTE TO SGT DAVID WEIR

In a solemn statement on the floor of the House of Representatives, Congressman Wamp honored the life and service of Sergeant David Thomas Weir who died serving his country in Baghdad on September 13, 2006.

“We will always remember him.” Congressman Wamp said. “We hail his life, a sacrificial life of service to others, putting everyone else above himself, believing in his mission and his comrades.”

SUCCESS AGAINST TERRORISM IS VITAL

TAX RELIEF AND WAGE LEGISLATION

Conservatives in the U.S. House of Representatives passed a tax relief package for hard-working Americans. The Estate Tax and Extension of Tax Relief Act of 2006 includes permanent death tax repeal up to $5 million, $3 million in annual funding for environmental cleanup of abandoned mines in Tennessee, an extension of the sales tax deduction for all Tennesseans, and a measurable increase in the minimum wage.

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

With terrorism and Islamic extremism gripping the Middle East, the goal of American energy independence has become a national security priority. American economic security and physical safety is at risk when we rely on other nations for our energy needs. SPECIAL ORDER ON U.N. REFORM

PLEDGE PROTECTION ACT OF 2005

Congressman Wamp affirmed the Founding Father’s belief in a higher being and that Americans should enjoy religious freedom to worship in any form that they choose by defending the Pledge of Allegiance in a heated debate in the House of Representatives. In many countries, where this freedom is not protected, there is opportunity for religious extremism and terrorism to take hold. Though the Founders agreed there should not be a dominant national religion, that doesn't mean this country should be godless.

HOUSE APPROVES WAMP BILL ENHANCING TRAIL OF TEARS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL
July 17, 2006
By a vote of 356 to 5, the House of Representatives passed Congressman Wamp’s legislation directing the National Park Service to determine how to expand the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail by including in the trail network additional routes historians have determined were also used by the Cherokee when they were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands.

IRAQ AND BORDER SECURITY

“If we are not on the offensive today, freedom is at risk for this generation.” Islamic terrorism is the greatest danger America has faced in recent decades and Congressman Wamp continues to emphasize to his colleagues the importance of supporting our troops in Iraq and achieving our mission there.
“Illegal immigration is unlawful and, therefore, un-American.” The time has come to secure the southern border and stop the influx of illegal immigrants. Representative Wamp reminded Members of Congress of the threat granting amnesty and citizenship to those who have entered our country without authorization poses to the security of our nation.
