FIGHTING METHAMPHETAMINE
September 22, 2010
Congressman Wamp co-sponsored a bill to work with retailers who sell certain over-the-counter medicines to prevent meth production. “We formed the Southeast Methamphetamine Task Force in East Tennessee – a premiere local, state and federal partnership – because methamphetamine production can’t be combated exclusively at the state and local levels,” said Congressman Wamp. “We’ve had tremendous success combating production in Tennessee, but we have to continue to modernize the laws in order for drug professionals to be able to keep ephedrine and pseudoephedrine out of the hands of people that are addicted. This is a bill that effectively gives our drug enforcement leadership the tools that they need to continue this fight.”

BEALE STREET BASS NOTE WALK OF FAME
September 22, 2010
John Elkington, of Memphis, Tennessee, is the newest member of the Beale Street Brass Note Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of nearly 100 individuals and groups who have had a significant influence on American music, particularly blues music. “With an extraordinary vision, John Elkington revitalized a two block section of historic Beale Street that had fallen into disrepair during the 1970’s. Where others failed, Elkington redeveloped Beale Street, turning it into one of America’s premier entertainment districts. Elkington possesses a rare combination of perseverance and optimism. His love for Memphis is unrivaled,” said Congressman Wamp in remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives.

HEUMF DEDICATION AT OAK RIDGE
March 22, 2010
More than a thousand people celebrated the opening of the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF) at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge,. “Big projects just don’t happen. Somebody has got to get in the middle of it, and make it happen. The people in this room made it happen,” Congressman Wamp congratulated the Y-12 community and other officials involved in the project. “This is the flagship of modernization within the NNSA. The joint mission of the HEUMF and the Uranium Processing Facility will mean that all of our enriched uranium is stored and processed in one centralized area.” HEUMF is the largest construction project at Y-12 in more than 40 years.

HEALTH CARE REFORM WRONG FOR THE STATES
March 17, 2010
Congressman Wamp spoke passionately against the Democrat government takeover of health care on the floor of the House of Representatives today, “This is a defining week in the history of this republic. At no time has the federal legislature mandated that everyone in this country buy anything. If this bill passes and is enacted into law, everyone in this country has to buy health insurance. It forces new people onto state Medicaid programs and is a multi-billion dollar mandate for Tennessee.”

VETERANS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO PTSD TREATMENT
March 4, 2010
Congressman Wamp raised the issue of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at a Military Construction Veterans Affairs Subcommittee hearing with VA Secretary Eric Shinseki: “As we add money and address the comprehensive issue of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, we must involve real veterans that have been through it, especially those who have dealt with it and restored their lives to a very productive level. People that have not been there cannot even fathom what these veterans are going through.” Zach said that the mental health side of veteran care is really important because a lot of our veterans suffer dramatically when they come home with PTSD.

APPOINTING THE ARCHITECT OF THE CAPITOL
February 3, 2010
The Architect of the Capitol is charged with the operation, maintenance and improvement of the U.S. Capitol, its adjacent buildings and grounds. Based on these Capitol responsibilities, Zach cosponsored legislation that would allow Congress to select the person for the Architect of the Capitol in a uniform appointment process. Urging his colleagues to support the measure, which passed the House of Representatives, Zach said, "The legislative branch engaged in a very meaningful way. We’re doing it for efficiency, responsibility and accountability, and I hope this will be made permanent under this new legislation."

EQUALITY AND JUSTICE
January 20, 2010
“Martin Luther King Day is all about equality and justice, the traits of our great nation that we hold so dear. That journey is not complete, but we have made great strides,” Congressman Wamp said on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “It’s so very important that we continue to fight for equality and justice for all. That’s what people from around the world look to our country in amazement about. Our national character is not born out of our greatness, our power, our tall buildings and our military might. It’s born out of our character, which comes from lessons learned and wrongs made right.”
