Congresswoman Jean Schmidt
Ohio’s Second Congressional District

Jean Schmidt is the first woman ever elected to represent Southern Ohio in Congress. The diverse Second Congressional District, which includes seven counties, stretches from downtown Cincinnati to the riverside town of Portsmouth in Scioto County.

Congresswoman Schmidt was first elected to Congress in the 2005 Special Election to fill the vacancy left when Ambassador Rob Portman resigned from the Second Congressional District seat after being confirmed as the United State Trade Representative.  Congresswoman Schmidt has twice been re-elected to Congress.

Jean Schmidt can best be described as a consensus builder as a Member of Congress. In her first full term she was able to move three significant pieces of legislation even though Republicans were in the minority. Her legislative accomplishments include authorizing nutrition education in the 2008 Farm bill, addressing tarmac delays at our nation’s airports and creating for the first time an inventory of our nation’s levee systems.

For the 111th Congress, Congresswoman Schmidt will serve once again on the House Transportation Committee and the House Agriculture Committee. On the Agriculture Committee she will take a leadership role as the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Horticulture and Organic Agriculture.

A lifelong resident of Clermont County, Congresswoman Schmidt has held various public offices and continues to be actively involved in civic and community groups.

Congresswoman Schmidt holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Cincinnati and her interests include auto racing and long distance running. She has competed in more than 77 marathons and continues to compete across the country. She resides in Miami Township with her husband Peter. They have one married daughter who blessed them with their first grandchild in October 2008 and a second in August of 2010.
