The Federal Student Aid Ombudsman of the Department of Education helps resolve disputes and solve other problems with federal student loans.

Follow these steps to help resolve problems with your student loan:

  1. You have a question about your student loan. Here are some tips for learning about your loan.
  2. You have a problem with your student loan. Take steps to resolve it yourself.
  3. Your efforts to resolve the problem yourself did not succeed. Prepare the materials you will need to get help from the Ombudsman's Office.
  4. Contact the Ombudsman's Office for assistance.
  5. Understand what you can expect to happen after you contact the Ombudsman.
  6. Avoid having a problem in the future.
