Boehner Recommends Flake for Appropriations Committee

Speaker-designate John Boehner today issued a statement supporting Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) for a seat on the Appropriations Committee, the panel that determines most government spending. Rep. Flake has been a tireless proponent of reduced government spending and a long-time opponent of earmarks.

Kennett Square Revitalization Gets Tax-Exempt Status

The IRS has granted tax-exempt status to the Gateway Project in Kennett Square. The revitalization is a joint effort of the YMCA, the library, and the park authority and will beautify, add new buildings, new walkways, and a new parking garage. I fully supported the the tax exemption for this project that will add so much to our community. The various improvements should be complete in three to five years. The Best Country to Start a Business

Monday's Wall Street Journal had a fascinating article entitled "The Best Country to Start a Business." The story  looked at factors like how much cash it takes to start a business and how many government procedures must be followed to register a new business, all information compiled by the Small Business Administration. The U.S. ranked third out of 71 countries for ease of creating a business. Denmark was ranked first with Canada coming in second. While it's good to be near the top, it would be much better to be number one.

McConnell Agrees to Earmark Ban

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) yesterday took to the Senate floor to announce that he would support the moratorium on earmarks supported by many newly elected Republican Senators. While McConnell has been a vocal supporter of earmarks, he recognized that voters are opposed to a practice that has become corrupt and has encouraged wasteful spending.

Protecting American Jobs: Rhetoric vs. Reality

Yesterday's Wall Street Journal editorial, "The Send Jobs Overseas Act," revealed a common problem with recent Democratic policies: legislation intended to protect or create jobs has the opposite effect. President Obama wants to change the way overseas income from American companies is taxed. While he says this is to protect American manufacturing, this would actually disadvantage American companies and potentially lead to more foriegn acquisitions of domestic manufacturing firms. The best way to make America more competitive is to reduce a corporate income tax that is the second highest in the developed world. Even liberal economists and Charlie Rangel (D-NY) have conceded that this tax is hurting American companies.
